E.M. ADAMS ? ALPHA KAPPA GAMMA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED
Recently, the E.M. Adams ? Alpha Kappa Gamma Memorial Scholarship was endowed at Panola College. Dr. and Mrs. James L. Sturrock, and their children Jeff Sturrock and Emalyn Lovitt established the scholarship to honor the college?s first librarian, Mr. E.M. Adams Jr.

Mr. Adams was a charter member of the Panola College faculty. On January 19, 1948, opening day of Panola Junior College, he began his career at Panola College. He first attended a faculty meeting with Mr. Floyd Boze, Miss Elaine Conlee, Mrs. Merle Glass, and Mr. L.R. Sharp.

During his first year, Mr. Adams purchased 2000 volumes for the college?s fledgling library. In addition to creating the college?s first library, Mr. Adams was very involved with student activities. In 1949, he directed an all-male cast and presented PJC?s first play, You Can?t Take It With You. It ran for only one night and was staged at the Carthage High School Auditorium.

In 1950, Mr. Adam?s job responsibilities were greatly increased when he was assigned the additional duties of the college registrar. Even though he was much busier, he continued his commitment to the students and in 1951, sponsored the social fraternity Alpha Kappa Gamma, of which Jim Sturrock was an officer.

Later the Pony Staff dedicated the 1954 annual The Pony, to Mr. Adams. Their dedication read, ?The Pony Staff proudly dedicates to Mr. E M. Adams, Jr., our sponsor, teacher, and friend, who has done so much for so many?.

Mr. Adams worked at Panola College from 1948 to 1957.

The E.M. Adams ? Alpha Kappa Gamma Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving student. The selection and announcement naming the recipient will be made in the spring each year. Applicants should contact Van Patterson, Director of Institutional Advancement at Panola College,(903) 693-2029.
